Alfred Hitchcock first crossed the Bristol Palace’s threshold in 1925, a 26-year-old director in Genoa to make The Pleasure Garden. He returned in 1955 for To Catch a Thief, by then world-famous. Between those visits stands the hotel’s dizzying white-marble staircase, said to have inspired the spiral motif in Vertigo.
